If 2020/2021 has taught us anything, it’s that our homes need to be adaptable and flexible, to pivot to the needs of each occupant inside. Courtyard Guesthouse was about providing three small and peaceful break-out pavilions in the yard of an existing warehouse for a tight-knit family with growing teens.

Designed to be used as a home office, yoga studio, a place for a sleepover for visiting relatives or as a self-contained unit, Courtyard Guesthouse is efficient in its floorplan and nimble in its ability to transform. With a fold-down bed that can be easily hidden away, built-in desk bathed in natural light, the perfect window seat for a good book, and a private bathroom connected by a glazed walkway, the studio provides a space for productivity and focus, family and friends.

Complimenting the existing home, a warehouse that was once a slipper factory, the studio is built from recycled bricks diverted from landfill.  Materials are industrial with galvanised reveals, roofing and bathroom mirror detailing, as well as exposed custom copper piping to form the tapware. Polished concrete surrounded by layers of FSC-certified timber joinery creates the effortless tranquility within. Naturally ventilated by large double-glazed windows and doors, a ceiling fan aids in airflow and cooling.

Taking cues from the family’s time living in Japan, the internal courtyard with perennial bamboo connects the living and terracotta-clad bathing pavilion together in a walkway dappled in sunlight.

When being together, yet apart at the same time has never been more needed, Courtyard Guesthouse is the perfect at-home getaway.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Courtyard Guesthouse stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture.
