The brief of this project was to convert a heritage building into an office for a young design based company. The flexible nature of the client’s work style called for spaces of different scales to accommodate activities ranging from meetings to recreation. The insertion of two acoustically treated, steel-framed pods divide the 750m2 office plate into programmatic zones, allowing the industrial space to retain its openness while providing the spatial & acoustic separation.

Borrowing from the industrial character, this office fit-out is a manifestation of Breathe’s ideology of simplicity and functionality. Designed to be their global headquarters, the clients were after a space that had legacy and permanence, but still showcased the company’s playful nature. Weighty, solid materials like fluted concrete, slate tiles, brass bench tops, and black stained timber were chosen to represent this.

The design concept took cues from the surrounding environment. ‘The Woods’ on level 16 is dark, green, textural, lush and rich, housing their executive business centre, meeting rooms, board room, kitchen and ‘all hands’ space.

‘The Fog’ on level 15 is light and bright with white perforated steel screens and textured glass meeting rooms. This level houses workstations and additional meeting rooms. A central two storey stair void links the two levels, with tensioned ropes for climbing plants, emphasising the height of the space and bringing in vegetation for their staff to enjoy.

We acknowledge the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Slack San Francisco Executive Business Centre stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.
